WELCOME TO THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR! School Hours are 8:10 AM – 2:20 PM.
We are happy to have you with us here at Central School. Following are some basic information for you: Our Principal is Mrs. Sharon Bird.
STUDENT ARRIVAL
Children may report to the school yard at 7:55AM. Children enter the building at 8:05AM. Children should not come to school earlier that 7:55AM UNLESS they have made arrangements with a teacher. During inclement weather, students in grades K-5 should enter the Cafeteria upon arrival. Students in grades 2-3 will be escorted to the second floor corridor at 7:55AM. Students in grades 4-5 will be escorted to the third floor corridor at 7:55AM. We ask that parents please do not enter the building with their child. We have found, through experience in all of our elementary schools, that when parents enter with their child, the period of dependency is extended and the development of responsibility and self-reliance is slowed. Should there be separation problems, staff
members will gladly assist.
LUNCH AND MILK TICKETS
Lunch and milk tickets will be sold on TUESDAYS for grades 1-5. A lunch ticket costs $2.75 per ticket.
5 tickets will cost $13.75. Milk tickets are .50 cents per ticket. 5 tickets will cost $2.50. Individual lunch tickets will not be sold on a daily basis. You may purchase any quantity of lunch and milk tickets. Please send in an envelope on Tuesday with your child’s name, teacher’s name and indicate on the outside of the envelope the number of lunch or milk tickets you wish to purchase and the amount of money enclosed. You may purchase a milk tickets for .50 and bring your own lunch. As a reminder, milk is included in the price of a lunch ticket. Students may no longer borrow lunch tickets. A cheese sandwich will be offered to students who forget their lunch.

All kindergarten students should bring their lunch and milk money on MONDAYS. Session I has lunch on Tuesday and Thursdays, and session II has lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays. Full day kindergarten students have lunch every day. Please see above for the price of lunch and milk tickets.
MENU
Lunch menus are printed weekly in the Stoneham Independent. A copy of the menu is located in each classroom and is distributed to parents monthly. The menu is also shown on the local cable channel.

Every student should bring a small healthy snack to school each day. Teachers will schedule a brief snack time in the morning.

ABSENCES
If your child is absent, IT IS REQUIRED THAT YOU CALL CENTRAL SCHOOL at 781-279-3860. There is a message machine available when school is not in session. Your cooperation is appreciated. Upon your child’s return, please send a note stating reason for the absence.
TARDY
If your child is tardy, entering after 8:10 AM, he/she must report to the office to receive a tardy slip BEFORE going to his/her classroom. This will allow us to make corrections to the attendance and correct the lunch count. You may accompany your child to the office to sign the tardy slip, but again we ask that your child proceed to his/her classroom by themselves or with a staff member.
EARLY DISMISSALS
If you wish to dismiss your child, you need to send a note into school or come in person and sign your child out in the office. Even if you send a note into the teacher, YOU MUST STILL PICK UP YOUR CHILD IN PERSON IN THE OFFICE.
COURT ORDERS
Please supply the office with any court orders or notify the office immediately regarding any changes in court order issues.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION
Two emergency forms will be given to each student on the first day of school. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT BOTH FORMS BE FILLED OUT AND RETURNED TO SCHOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If a change on an emergency form is necessary, please contact the school IMMEDIATELY, either by note or telephone call. It is vitally important that we have a telephone number where we may reach an adult in charge during the day.
STUDENT DISMISSAL
All families are encouraged to walk to school. If you do drive, please be mindful of the safety of the children and follow the guidelines below. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students are dismissed from the tot lot next to the cafeteria at 2:20PM. All other students are dismissed to the basketball court at the north end of the building. Please note that parking in the fire lane in front of Central School is prohibited. Live parking begins at the chain link fence next to the basketball court, and continues to the corner. Adults MUST remain in their cars at all times during drop off and pick up while in live parking spaces. This is strictly enforced. If you wish to exit your car, please park in the designated parking spaces. Students must enter and exit vehicles from the
passenger side onto the sidewalk. Please do not risk the safety of your child by having them enter or exit a vehicle into the traffic.
VISITORS AND VOLUNTEERS
We welcome everyone to our school. For safety reasons, all visitors, as well as volunteers, are asked to stop in the office upon entering the building. In the office, you must sign in and pick up a visitor or volunteer badge. No one is allowed to interrupt the classroom. Visits must be planned ahead of time. Contact with the teachers and students must be through the office only. Please DO NOT go to classrooms unannounced – before school, during school, or after school.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The Central School Council consists of parents, teachers, the principal and community representative(s).
The council is responsible for the development and implementation of a yearly School Improvement Plan. Elections are held every fall. If you are interested in becoming involved with your school, this is a great way to do it! Please consider running for a seat on the Council.
PTO
Central School is extremely fortunate to have a very active Parent Teacher Organization. We encourage you to attend all meetings as indicated in the monthly calendar. Your input is important!
STUDENTS WITHDRAWING DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
If you are moving during the school year, you must come into the office and sign release forms so that your child’s records may be forwarded to his/her new school. If you move out of town or within Stoneham but not within the Central School district and wish to remain at Central School for a short period of time, you MUST write a letter to Superintendent of Schools and request that your child remain at Central School so that he/she may finish the remainder of the school year. Only the Superintendent may grant permission for your child to remain at Central School.
